Traffic Flow & Spacing

Click "Validate Traffic Flow" after arranging furniture to check clearance (30"+ main paths, 18" coffee table gap, 24" bed sides).

How It Works

1

Set Your Room Dimensions

Enter the width and length of your room in feet. The canvas rescales automatically so everything is drawn to accurate proportions.

2

Pick a Room Template

Choose Living Room, Bedroom, Home Office, or Dining Room to pre-load a starter layout — or start with a blank room.

3

Add Furniture From the Library

Click any item in the Furniture Library. Each piece uses real industry-standard dimensions (sofa 84"×36", queen bed 60"×80", etc.). You can also add your own custom furniture — it's saved in your browser for next time.

4

Drag, Rotate, and Arrange

Drag pieces anywhere inside the room. Click a piece to select it, then rotate or delete using the action buttons.

5

Validate Traffic Flow

Press "Validate Traffic Flow" to check spacing against interior design standards and get warnings about tight walkways.

Key Facts About Room Layout & Space Planning

Frequently Asked Questions

How much clearance should I leave around furniture?

Leave at least 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) of clearance for main traffic paths and 18 inches (45 cm) between a sofa and coffee table. Proper clearance is a core principle of interior design & home furnishing.

What is the ideal distance between a TV and a sofa?

The recommended viewing distance is 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal screen size. For a 55-inch TV, place the sofa 7 to 11 feet away.

How do I arrange furniture in a small living room?

Place the largest piece first, usually the sofa, against the longest wall. Use multi-functional furniture, float pieces away from walls when possible, and keep traffic lanes at least 30 inches wide.

What is the standard size of a queen bed?

A standard queen mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long (152 × 203 cm). Allow at least 24 inches of walking space on each side.

How do I measure a room for furniture?

Measure the length and width of the room at floor level, note doorways, windows, and outlets. Record ceiling height and sketch the layout to scale using a tool like Fillaroom's Furniture Space Planner.

Can I save my own custom furniture?

Yes. Use the "+ Add Custom Furniture" button in the Furniture Library to enter a name, width, and depth in inches. Your custom pieces are saved to a cookie in your browser so they'll still be there when you return.
